Agriculture remains one of the nation’s most hazardous industries, and confined spaces such as grain bins and manure pits can become deadly in a matter of seconds.
Across the land-grant university system, Cooperative Extension programs are helping producers, agricultural workers, and first responders build the skills needed to prevent tragedies and respond safely when emergencies occur.
How Can First Responders Prepare for a Grain Bin Rescue Emergency?
When a local Indiana fire department reached out for help with grain bin safety training, Purdue Extension answered the call. Over a three-day workshop, Extension educators trained 110 firefighters, first responders, and emergency personnel in confined space best practices.
Participants learned about grain flow, entrapment risks, and rescue procedures, then practiced with grain rescue tubes in a grain-filled trailer. Nearly two-thirds had no prior experience with grain handling systems, yet 100% reported increased knowledge of grain bin rescue situations and 90% reported greater confidence responding to grain-related emergencies.

How Can Farmers Stay Safe Around Grain Bins and Manure Pits?
Keeping farms safe starts with knowing how to prevent and respond to emergencies. Michigan State University Extension partnered with organizations across Michigan to provide grain bin and manure pit safety training for farm workers, managers, and emergency responders.
More than 130 participants across four locations learned how to identify hazards, follow confined-space safety procedures, and respond to emergencies. The training generated strong community interest, with several agencies pursuing additional training opportunities and one community purchasing a grain bin rescue tube to improve local emergency preparedness.
