19 STRONG: CELEBRATING 1890 LAND-GRANT UNIVERSITIES’ SUCCESSES AND IMPACTS
Throughout their 135-year distinguished history, 1890 land-grant universities have propelled agricultural research, education, and Extension by advancing groundbreaking discoveries, ensuring students’ success, and strengthening their communities. The 1890 land-grant universities are historically Black universities that were established under the Second Morrill Act. The “19 Strong” institutions’ ongoing expertise and collaboration continue to pave the way for a thriving future.

The Association of Extension Administrators, Association of 1890 Research Directors, Council of 1890 Deans of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are among the official representative bodies of the 1890 Land-grant Universities, supporting Cooperative Extension, research and agricultural education.
1890 land-grant universities are making a positive difference in the nation every year.
Here are a few examples how:
Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University (AAMU)’s College of Agricultural, Life and Natural Sciences (CALNS) is addressing the reniform nematode (RN), a common pest for U.S. cotton producers that results in annual losses of $100 million. This pest threatens the cotton industry, which creates more than 400,000 jobs and annual revenue of $25 billion. A CALNS team became the first to sequence and identify the rhizosphere specific microbial abundance associated with the RN. Control strategies developed from this study could help the industry maintain its value, productivity, and employment opportunities.
The Successful Aging Initiative helps seniors age successfully at home by teaching life management strategies related to aging. Adopting these practices can increase personal wealth and save millions of dollars in health care, identity theft, and probate court costs among older adults.
