Alabama has a booming fruit and vegetable production industry which generates more than $160 million in revenue and provides employment to thousands of residents. The growth in the industry is also representative of the growth in local food movement and organic farming in the South.
It is incredibly difficult to start farming, especially if the individual does not have earlier experiences in agriculture. Yet, the current farm population is aging and the current generation of farmers are retiring. The Beginning Farmer Program provides basic educational infrastructure and support services to beginning farmers and transitioning producers, including those in underserved communities and military veterans interested in agriculture. This is a multi-team project with a complex communication/marketing plan and evaluation systems.
