New manual aids farmers market start-ups and maintenance

In Uncategorized by AgIsAmerica

Farmers markets are a sales outlet for many South Dakota gardeners, but they can also help strengthen a community by stimulating the local economy and creating local entrepreneurial opportunities. Markets can promote food quality by reducing the distance that food travels from farm to consumer. When shipping is less of a concern, produce can be picked when it is full of flavor and tender, then quickly put into the hands of consumers seeking fresh products.

During 2021, a Farmers Market Manual was created by the South Dakota State University Extension food safety field specialist. The comprehensive manual includes steps and considerations for assisting new farmers market start-ups and pertinent information for maintaining existing farmers markets. Essentially, it is a toolkit for ensuring that South Dakota farmers markets are operating efficiently, effectively, and safely. Currently, this tool is available to the public at no cost, and it is available for print/download.
