4-H programming at the Natchitoches Farmer’s Market

4-H is a youth development organization devoted to bringing innovative programs to youth across the nation. Focused on providing innovative Healthy Living Programming, 4-H seeks to empower youth to make healthy choices and bring healthy habits to their families and communities. According to County Health Rankings.org, Natchitoches Parish boasts a 42% obesity rate, 32% of the children live in poverty, and 37% are physically inactive.

During the 2021 Natchitoches Farmer’s Market, a series of 12 lessons were presented to approximately 500 Natchitoches Parish youth. Topics included , but not limited to My Plate , benefits of eating fresh fruit and vegetables, eating more whole grains, and heart healthy recipe sharing and sampling. In addition, each youth that participated received $5 worth of fresh produce each Saturday at the market. (Sponsored by the Natchitoches Farmer’s Market.) In addition Natchitoches Parish 4-H teens engage youth participants in the Mobil Park, promoting physical activity. The Mobil Park is housed at the Natchitoches Farmer’s Market venue during market season.
