MSU’s Foundation Seed Serves Suppliers, Growers
Mississippi State University’s foundation seed program has provided different types of seeds to distributors and growers for 55 years. MSU tries to accommodate other states and countries with seeds if there is a need and their supply is available. This year, MSU’s Foundation Seed Stocks received an international request, as well as requests in 27 states. There are three classes in the seed certification system: Foundation seed is the highest class, then registered seed and finally, certified seed. Foundation seed is the closest progeny to breeder seed available to seed distributors and growers. Registered seed comes from foundation seed, and certified seed is grown from registered seed. Some of the major crops that come from the seeds are sweet sorghum, soybean and rice.
