The Florida Aquifer holds an extremely significant role within the southeast, providing irrigation for farms, billions of dollars annually to the economy, and drinking water to approximately 10 million people. The preservation of the aquifer and its surrounding ecosystems is essential. However, some agricultural and industrial practices typical to the surrounding areas pose a threat to the Aquifer’s quality maintenance.
Auburn University will team up with several other southeastern universities on a new USDA NIFA-funded project. The project seeks to further develop sustainability within agriculture and forestry, providing greater safety for the water quality and habitats that compose the Floridian Aquifer.
Researchers will also develop farming methods that reduce damage inflicted by water and fertilizer over use. Find out more about the project here.More From: Auburn University
